The Human Good
Uma das mais antigas questões filosóficas é “Qual é a vida melhor para um ser humano?” Depois de considerar algumas respostas famosas, antigas e recentes, proponho que abordemos a questão através de um método relativamente simples que a maioria dos filósofos tem negligenciado. Devemos perguntar o que, em geral, está implicado na circunstância de alguma coisa (condição, estado, actividade, incluindo um certo modo de vida) ser bom para alguma entidade (algum objecto, animal ou pessoa) e, então, aplicar esta resposta ao caso humano. Este método, defendo, suscita uma resposta surpreendentemente intuitiva.
One of the oldest questions in philosophy is “What is the best life for a human being?” After considering some prominent ancient and recent answers to that question, I propose that we approach the question using a relatively simple method that most philosophers have neglected. We should ask what in general is involved in something’s (some, condition, state, or activity, including a certain kind of life) being good for some entity (some object, animal, or person), and then applying this answer to the human case. This method, I argue, yields a surprisingly intuitive answer.

Christine Korsgaard é Arthur Kingsley Porter Research Professor de Filosofia na Universidade de Harvard e recebeu títulos honoríficos atribuídos pela Universidade de Illinois (2004) e pela Universidade de Groningen (2014).
Christine Korsgaard has been a leading voice in moral philosophy, thanks to her reflections on practical reason, agency, personal identity, and, more recently, human-animal relations. Her publications includes The Sources of Normativity (Cambridge, 1996), which explores the foundations of obligation in moral philosophy; Creating the Kingdom of Ends (Cambridge, 1996), a collection of her essays on Kantian ethics; and The Constitution of Agency (Oxford, 2008), which brings together her work on practical reason and moral psychology. Furthermore, Self-Constitution: Agency, Identity, and Integrity (Oxford, 2009) is a key work, as is Fellow Creatures: Our Obligations to the Other Animals (2018), which offers a Kantian approach to our duties towards other animals. Professor Korsgaard’s lecture in Lisbon is directly related to her recent research on the notion of the human good.
